SBIFF presents documentary about effort to save Asian Elephants

In today's Local Spotlight, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is screening a documentary about a woman who's single-handedly trying to save the Asian Elephant in Thailand--a species expected to go extinct within the next four decades.
The film is entitled, "Elephant Whisperer."
It's the true story of a woman named Lek, who's already succeeded in creating a special camp, the "Elephant Nature Park," where more than 200 of the animals now live in a protected preserve.
Time magazine presented her with the "Asian Hero of the Year" award for her work.
The film examines the plight of the elephants, as their role shifts from widely used domestic animals in rural areas to becoming somewhat of a burden in modern communities.
"Elephant Whisperer" screens this afternoon at 4pm and again friday morning at 10.
