Molly Schlemer and Jonae Ervin combined for 34 points to lead the Cal Poly women's basketball to a 78-40 win over Cal State Fullerton on Thursday in a Big West Conference game in the Mott Athletics Center. The Mustangs snapped a two game losing skid and improved to 5-3 in Big West play and 11-8 for the season. The Titans fell to 3-5 in conference and 7-13 overall.
The Mustangs fell behind 8-4 early in the first half, but Ervin fueled a 16-4 run to give the Mustangs the lead for good. Ervin had 11 of her 15 points in the first half. Cal Poly shot 48 percent in the first half on 13 for 27 shooting. Schlemer, a Righetti High graduate, added 9 points in just 9 minutes in the first half.
Cal Poly came out firing in the second half and went on a 34-8 run to put the game out of reach. Schlemer scored 10 points in the second half to finish with a game-high 19 points, her seventh-straight game with 10 or more points.
The Mustangs made 19 of their 29 shots in the second half for a 66 percent clip. They shot 57 % for the game.
The Mustangs recorded assists on 23 of their 32 baskets for the game. Ervin led the team with 8 assists and Ariana Elegado added 6.
Cal Poly outrebounded the Titans 40-28. Nikol Alison came off the bench to grab a team-best 8 rebounds to go with 8 points. Schlemer added 7 boards and Ervin added 6.
The Mustangs and their fans wore red during the game as part of a Red Out. The event raised awareness of heart disease, the leading cause of death among women in the United States. The American Heart Association's Wear Red Day is on Friday.
Cal Poly is now 8-3 at home this season.
Cal Poly hosts UC Riverside on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. It will be wear pink day as part of the Play4Kay initiative to raise awareness about breast cancer.
