Search for missing Santa Barbara pilot suspended

The search for the missing plane over Yosemite National Park and surrounding areas has been suspended. The single engine plane was last detected by radar on Monday over the North Dome area in the park. Search efforts throughout the week have failed to recover the pilot, Nicol Wilson, who is from the Santa Barbara area.

More than 5 feet of new snow has fallen in higher elevations of the park. Strong winds are expected causing extremely dangerous search conditions.

The park began its search Tuesday December 18th with search efforts continuing throughout the week. Numerous agencies helped in the search including search and rescue teams from Yosemite National Park, California Highway Patrol, and Civil Air Patrol. Approximately 60 personnel from the teams flew approximately 8,000 linear miles over the search area.

Originally the plane began its flight from Santa Ynez airport. Wilson was the only person on board. His family reported him missing the evening of December 17th after failing to arrive in Mammoth Lakes.

The park plans to resume search efforts in the spring, or when weather condition permit.
