SF mayor wants retrofits on older buildings

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Thousands of San Francisco property owners would be forced to retrofit older structures vulnerable to earthquakes under legislation proposed by the mayor.
It would cost property owners $60,000 to $130,000 each for seismic upgrades.
Mayor Ed Lee said Tuesday that the city is trying to protect about 58,000 residents and 7,000 workers who live or work in so-called "soft-story" structures.
The city has identified more than 4,500 buildings that need retrofits and a voluntary program hasn't worked.
The San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/11oLzsE ) says the list of buildings is being examined and it is estimated about 3,000 structures would likely require seismic upgrades.
