Santa Barbara County Sheriff deputies are investigating a death that happened Wednesday morning when a woman was struck by an Amtrak train in Montecito.

Sgt. John Froelicher said it is unclear at this time if the woman intentionally or accidentally stepped in front of the northbound train at the railroad crossing at Butterfly Lane.

Sgt. Froelicher said the woman appeared to be between the ages of 35 and 55 years old and was walking her dog at the time. The dog was not injured and was taken to a city animal shelter.

The crash, which happened about 10:30 a.m., shut down rail traffic for about 90 minutes Wednesday morning.
