Sheriff's Office: More arrests, injuries during Spring Break party

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office says there was a larger crowd and more arrests and injuries over the weekend during the unofficial spring break party known as Deltopia in Isla Vista.

As many as 18,000 people attended the party. Last year, the crowd was made up of about 8,000 to 10,000 people.

Sheriff's officials say law enforcement had 440 calls for service associated with Deltopia, compared to 243 last year.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office, along with the University of California Police Department, made 23 arrests and issued 71 criminal citations. The arrests included fights, assaults, battery, sexual battery, public intoxication, and thefts.

County Emergency Medical Services paramedics contacted 67 patients. Forty-four people were taken to the hospital for injuries and/or alcohol-related illnesses.

The California Highway Patrol issued 59 traffic citations and made five DUI arrests.

Santa Barbara County Fire also responded to more than 70 calls for service.

Sheriff's officials say they are working with the County, UCSB and law enforcement agencies to find ways to make the event safer in the future.
