Santa Barbara County Animal Services is warning the public about an outbreak of distemper among raccoons.
The sick raccoons have recently been found in the Santa Barbara area, including the Eastside, Sycamore Canyon and Arroyo Burro Beach. The outbreak is believed to be widespread.
Officials with Animal Services say dog and cat owners should make sure their pets have been vaccinated for the disease.
If you see a sick wild animal, they say you should not approach it, but rather contact your local animal control agency or wildlife rehabilitation facility.
