SLO High soccer player in critical condition after Monday's accident

A 17 year old San Luis Obispo High School student remains in critical condition as of 6:10 pm on Tuesday night at a local hospital.

The California Highway Patrol says Alex Maier was driving his Ford F-150 pickup truck when it collided with another car at the Santa Rosa off-ramp southbound on Highway 101 around 8:30 pm Monday night. Maier's car ended up hanging over the guardrail. Emergency crews extricated Maier out of of his vehicle and rushed him to the hospital.

Maier is a senior at San Luis Obispo High School. He is a forward on the boys varsity soccer team and has 3 goals this season. The Tigers were scheduled to host Mission Prep Tuesday night at 6pm. But the game was postponed. School administrators declined to comment any further.

Dozens of Maier's friends posed for a picture posted online where they were holding up two fingers on one hand and three fingers on the other hand in support of Maier. His uniform number is 23 on the soccer team.
