Some animals in Santa Barbara County got a new home Monday. The Santa Maria Valley Humane Society moved dozens of dogs and cats to its new location on west Stowell Road. The humane society's new building is double the size of the old location on Black Road, which will give the organization more space for surgeries and housing adoptable animals. Plans for a new clinic started back in 2005. The humane society's spay/neuter clinic is still operating at the Black Road location until construction is completed at the new clinic. The new facility has 22 indoor and outdoor dog adoption kennels and a cat village. There are also six isolation kennels for dogs that become ill. The final project that still needs to be built is a large dog adoption kennel building that will include 26 indoor and outdoor runs. This will give the organization more room to house adoptable dogs and cats and increase the number of dogs the organization will be able to transfer to the Santa Barbara County Animal Services Shelter and prevent animal overcrowding. "We've been doing about 2,500 surgeries a year. We've done over 26,000 to date in that little clinic, but it's not enough to get ahead of the problem in the Santa Maria area. Throughout Santa Barbara County the Santa Maria area has been the trouble spot for animals. So this project is designed specifically to provide this community with the infrastructure we need to save more lives," said Santa Maria Valley Humane Society Executive Director Jill Tucker. The new adoption center will be open to the public Tuesday October 29th at 10 a.m. Tucker says the humane society still needs more funding to complete the entire project. She says they need about $400,000 to complete the rest of the dog kennels.
