Spring is here, and with this season comes lots of cleaning. De-cluttering and maintaining your home could save it from a fire.
Central Coast fire departments are speaking out about the importance of making sure your home is clean, and fire proof.
"It's just a matter of doing good maintenance," said Dan Orr, fire chief for the Santa Maria Fire Department.
Chief Off said it is important your items don't block door ways in your home; that's what happened earlier this month when an Orcutt couple had to break a window to escape a house fire.
"If you're not using something consistantly, maybe it's time to think about getting rid of it, just to help reduce some of that unwanted clutter," said Chief Orr.
In a Santa Maria apartment, a bathroom fire happened all because of a dirty fan.
"Just full of dirt and it actually froze the fan up to the point where it caused a fire in that apartment," said Chief Orr.
The fire chief also said to maintain those yards of yours; especially, the side yard.
"We're going to make access through your side gates to get to you backyard. If you have a bunch of stuff back there, that can be very difficult for us to do," added Chief Orr.
