Still no quarterback after Spring Game

Junior Vince Moraga and redshirt freshman Tanner Trosin each threw a touchdown pass while sophomore Dano Graves, a transfer from Air Force, rushed for 45 yards as each quarterback staked their claim to the starting role at the annual spring game in Spanos Stadium. Sophomore Chris Brown, also in the mix for the starting quarterback position didn't play in Saturday's scrimmage due to a wrist injury.

After the 90-minute scrimmage head coach Tim Walsh said he hasn't seen enough from any of the quarterbacks to name him the starter. "There's a lot of stuff that still needs to get cleaned up. I'm pleased that we ran a hundred plays and we'll be able to look at that and really evaluate that but I would say you can ask me on August 17th and I'll let you know" said Walsh. August 17th would be two weeks before the Mustangs open up the 2013 season at home against the University of San Diego.

Moraga, Trosin and Graves rotated series in that order. Trosin connected with Sam Holguin on an 18-yard scoring pass on the fifth drive while Moraga hit Carson McMurtrey on a 16-yarder ending the 12th drive.

Senior Bobby Zalud missed two long field goal attempts but made one from 27 yards away for the only other scoring of the scrimmage.

With scoring as it is for scrimmages matching the offense versus the defense the offense also scored points for its 30 first downs and a pair of plays of 25 yards or longer -- a 25-yard run on a fake punt by Stephen Pyle and a 31-yard pass from Kenny Johnston to Kenny Mitchell.

Kevin Britt and Tim Puerling intercepted passes to boost the scoring for the defense. Britt, a Nipomo High School graduate, intercepted Graves on the ninth drive while Puerling, from St. Joseph High School, ended the scrimmage with an interception of Johnston.

The defense also scored points for holding the offense to a three-and-out (three times) as well as for stopping the offense from scoring (six times).

The Cal Poly offense ran 82 rushing plays and 23 passing plays while winning the scrimmage, 51-27.

Moraga completed six of eight passes for 40 yards while Trosin was three of four for 43 yards. Graves connected on two of eight passes for 22 yards and Johnston completed three of five passes for 45 yards.

In addition to Graves, Cal Poly's rushing leaders were redshirt freshman Kori Garcia with 56 yards on nine carries and senior fullback Matthew Rulon with 47 yards. Trosin added 31 yards on 10 carries while Moraga rushed for 14 yards on nine attempts.

Senior linebacker Xavier Ramos made 10 tackles to lead all Mustang defenfers. Junior lineman Wesley Flowers added seven tackles, including two for lost yardage, while lineman Joe Coleman notched six tackles, also with two for lost yardage.
