Playground quality varies by neighborhood, according to a new study published in the journal Pediatrics.
Researchers in Chicago rated 500 playgrounds on their design, ground surfacing, equipment maintenance, and physical environment.
They found areas of poverty had fewer playgrounds and were more likely to have play areas with failing grades.
The researchers say annual playground inspections could improve their safety.
A failing grade was most often due to a playground not having enough wood chips or equipment maintenance issues.
