Surveillance video shows memorial vandalism

Atascadero police say they are working some leads today as they try to figure out who vandalized a local veteran's memorial.

Wednesday, someone drove a truck into the Faces of Freedom Memorial, causing nearly $15,000 in damages.

"When I look at that eagle, I think of all the young men and women who've sacrificed their lives," said Carol Unfried.

Tears are a familiar sight at the Faces of Freedom Memorial in Atascadero.
For Carol Thursday is no exception.

Her husband Wes Unfried Sr was a World War II veteran.

During the war, Wes was dropped off by his unit at a hospital to be treated for a minor injury.
That would be the last time he saw four of his closest friends.

"His four buddies that brought him to the medic went down the road to catch up with their battalion and they hit a land mine and all four of them were killed," said Unfried.

If the memorial walls could talk, these are the stories they would tell. Wednesday, someone tried to destroy those memories.

Skid marks are visible through the middle of the memorial. Police say the truck came through the area slamming into two 600 pound marble benches.

Surveillance footage released Thursday shows the truck circling around the back of the memorial before hitting the gas. When we freeze the video, you can clearly see a lumber rack on the truck.
Police say a jogger also described seeing a metal tool box in the truck bed.

Now, for families like Unfried's, they wouldn't let this act of vandalism ruin a surprise for Carol.
A brick engraved with her late husband's name.

"This is from your children sweetheart, we love you, we're so proud of you," said Carol as tears fell upon the brick of the memorials newest honoree.

Police say the trucks tailgate has a chrome strip with the word Chevrolet in black. If you have any information, you're encouraged to contact the Atascadero Police Department.
