Smoking synthetic marijuana may cause acute kidney injury.
In 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention received 16 reports of kidney damage in people who had recently smoked synthetic marijuana.
The patients were in various stages of kidney failure, and reported feeling nausea and pain in their stomach and side.
Synthetic marijuana mimics the effects of THC. The products are sold as incense, and often labeled "not for consumption," but some people still smoke it.
The products are sold under the names "Spice" and "K2."
