Kris Yanku threw up a desperation shot near half court at the buzzer and banked in the game-winning three for Taft to hand the Righetti high boys basketball team a heartbreaking 70-68 overtime loss in the challenge round of the 14th annual Mission Prep Christmas Classic on Wednesday.
The Warriors had just taken a 68-67 lead with 1.4 seconds to play on a clutch bucket from sophomore sensation Cameron Walker. However, Taft, the three-time defending National Division champion, turned to its Northern Arizona-bound star. Yanku finished with a game-high 39 points.
Walker led the Warriors from start to finish offensively. The sophomore, who's being recruited by Irvine, UCLA, Cal Poly, USC and Stanford, finished with 32 points.
Marcus McMorris added 10 points for Righetti, while Frankie Platero added 13 points.
Darius Henderson added 17 points for Taft, which is being led by first year head coach CJ Williams.
Righetti led 16-11 after the first quarter, but trailed 35-31 at the half. The Warriors outscored Taft 18-10 in the third quarter to lead by four points to start the fourth quarter before the Toreadors forced overtime.
Taft opens National Division play at 2:30 pm at Mission Prep, while Righetti follows at 4pm against Mission Hills.
