As college graduates enter the workforce it's competitive, but as the most recent jobs report showed, things are looking up.

More than 700 students will be taking the next step Saturday at Cal Poly -- and that is different for everyone.

"I was never worried because I knew that I was going to go into a health profession," said Jordan Lewis, a soon-to-be-grad.

A profession that historically wins.

"People need healthcare and dental," he said.

Jordan Lewis will get his diploma Saturday. His plans: continue to volunteer as coach for Cal Poly's basketball team, travel and apply to dental school.

"I think the job market is getting better," said Lewis.

Cal Poly career counselors agreed, and said Friday, the job market is beginning to score.

"It's exciting opposed to 2009 when our numbers were going down and we were having two day job fairs that were turning into one day job fairs, and we didn't even do some of the other job fairs," said Moore.

She said Central Coast companies are interested in hiring new grads.

"Just from last year, our career fair participation has gone as far as the amount of companies, 10 percent," said Moore. "As far as managers coming to recruit that's up 20 percent from last year."

On campus recruiting has increased by 12 percent according to Moore.

Her advice to those graduating, go for a three pointer.

"We are trying to open students up to the opportunities that are not only local, and national, but abroad as well," said Moore.

"I have a lot of friends who are graduating as well, and they are looking at jobs and it makes them more confident that there are some jobs available," said Lewis.

Cal Poly's next job fair is scheduled for mid-January, thus far 60 companies plan to have booths.
