Templeton man arrested on suspicion of murder

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office says a Templeton man killed a woman late Wednesday night while a five-year old child was in the home.

The victim has been identified as Tina Marie Beddow, 32, of Templeton.

Investigators say it happened on Eric Lane, near Templeton Hills Road. Deputies arrested Philip Thomas Hanes, 58, at the scene. He faces a charge of murder.

The Sheriff's Office says it received a 911 call from Beddow who was inside the home at around 10:20 p.m. When deputies arrived, they found she had been stabbed. She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.

Neighbors are still a little shaken up after hearing the news of an alleged homicide in their normally quiet Templeton neighborhood.

"It looked like something pretty crazy you know, because there were so many people there," said Roland Granger.

Granger has lived on Eric Lane for 26 years and says he's never seen anything like this.

"I got home from walking my dog and a fire truck pulled up and two Sheriff cars and then an ambulance," he said. "And we saw them pull out a body from the house."

He says he exchanged pleasantries with Hanes and Beddow a few times over the last year, but the two mostly kept to themselves.

"It kind of shocked me because he seemed like a pretty nice guy to me. He didn't seem like a violent type of guy," said Granger.

The Sheriff's Office says there were three people in the house at the time of the stabbing -- Hanes, Beddow, and the five-year old. That child is related to Hanes and is now under the care of Child Welfare Services.

"If what happened is true, it pretty much messed up three people's lives, you know," said Granger.

Another neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said Hanes came over to his house around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday and said a woman in his home was hurt. Hanes asked the neighbor to call 911, but when the neighbor made that call, the dispatcher told him they'd already received a 911 call and emergency crews were on their way.
