Just three years after restarting the Templeton High boys volleyball program, the Eagles captured their first-ever Los Padres League title on Thursday night in Santa Maria. The Eagles swept the host Saints 25-12, 25-13 and 25-15.
Templeton improved to 6-0 in league and 12-1 overall. The Eagles are ranked 10th this week in the CIF Southern Section Division 4 Coaches Poll.
"It's phenomenal. It shows you can really pull a phoenix and rise out of the ashes," said junior middle blocker Henri Cherry, who led the Eagles with 18 kills. Ben Schaner tallied 9 kills and 2 aces, Sam Chatham threw down 5 kills and 3 aces, while Tobey Isbell recorded 7 kills.
"It's been a real honor playing with everyone. Three years we worked really hard. We started out pretty rough and really came along," said senior setter Eric Lahargou, who dished out 42 assists in the match.
The Eagles started at the junior varsity level in 2011. They competed at the varsity level as a member of the LPL in 2012. Now in their second year at the varsity level, Templeton has clinched its first LPL title and a home game in the first round of the CIF playoffs.
Templeton has two league games left with matches against Nipomo and Morro Bay. One win or a Santa Ynez loss would clinch the outright title for the Eagles.
