Tigers split games in opening day of SLO Spring Tournament

Dominic Fountain took a called third strike as the tying run to end the game as the San Luis Obispo High baseball team lost 6-3 to Simi Valley on Wednesday to open the Tigers' 38th annual Spring Tournament.

The Tigers never led in the game or got closer than two runs. The Pioneers built a 3-0 lead after Sinjin Todd surrendered a 2-run home run. The Tigers got a run back in the third when Joey Benadiba singled to right field to score Todd. Garrett Giovannelli was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on the play to end the inning.

Simi Valley cranked a run-scoring double in the third and then Dylan Alexander crushed a high fastball over the left field fence for a solo home run to make it a 5-1 game. The Tigers battled back with a run on a fielder's choice off the bat of Todd and a run off a wild pitch to make it a 5-3 deficit after six.

The Pioneers added a run on a bad-hop single to provide an insurance run. The Tigers put runners at the corners with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but could not get the clutch hit to extend the rally.

The Tigers later beat Dos Pueblos 6-3.

Also on Wednesday, Cabrillo fell 7-4 to St. Ignatius and 8-3 to Royal.

The ten-team tournament runs through Friday.
