Tips for New Year's fitness resolutions

It's now 2014 and it's time to start acting on your New Year's resolutions.

A study released by the University of Scranton found 45% of Americans make some type of resolution but only 8% keep it.

The most popular resolution this year, as you'd probably suspect, is to lose weight.

Some regulars at Western Village Health Club say the gym will be busy with new members, but only for a short time.

"New memberships, new people, new resolutions," said gym member Myrna Taira.

"It gets really packed for about two months and then they stop coming," said David Maldonado.

If you are determined to follow through with your 2014 fitness goals, trainer Stephanie Davis says you have to make a lifestyle change.

"They come in and work super hard, practically killing themselves, and it's hard at first and (they) want results fast, but it takes time," said Davis.

Her tips for starting a new program are to make it fun so you develop a routine and good habits, have realistic goals and expectations, and take classes. Davis says classes present a more social setting with instruction from an expert.

She also suggests you keep your workouts fresh by changing up your routine.

"It has to be a lifestyle change. You have to think even when I get to my goal I am still going to keep working, I'm still going to come to the gym, I'm still going to eat better and make better choices," said Davis.

Davis says if you do join a gym, check to see if they offer equipment orientation classes and free sessions with a personal trainer to get you started on a fitness program.

Other top resolutions for 2014 include getting organized and quitting smoking.
