Titans stay undefeated, beat Atascadero 3-1

Courtney Cuzick threw another gem to lead the Nipomo softball team to its second win over reigning Pac 7 League champion Atascadero in the last week. The reigning Los Padres League champion Titans defeated the host Greyhounds 3-1 on Thursday.

Cuzick struck out 8 Greyhounds and scattered 6 hits. She walked one and allowed a single run in the seventh inning. The Titans, ranked 2nd in the CIF Division 5 coaches poll, improved to 7-0 on the season. Atascadero fell to 4-2 with both of its losses coming at the hands of Cuzick and Nipomo.

The Titans took a 1-0 lead in the second inning with Gianna Abatti singled to right field to score Vangie Lopez from third. A runner tried to score from second on the play, but she was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

Nipomo scored two crucial runs in the sixth inning. Saundra Renner drove in one of the runs. Lopez and Destiny Fryckman both went 2 for 3 the plate for the Titans. Lopez scored twice. The Titans finished with 9 hits in the game.

The Titans play at Templeton on Friday at 7 pm in a LPL game. Atascadero hosts a doubleheader against Lompoc on Saturday.
