Top 10 Local Sports Stores of '12: Historic season from Cal Poly's Kristina Santiago

Santa Maria native Kristina Santiago's historic senior season for the Mustangs is the second installment in KSBY Sports' Top 10 Local Sports stories of 2012.

Coming off ACL surgery, the Righetti High graduate put together the finest season in Cal Poly women's basketball history. She led the Big West and ranked fifth in the NCAA by averaging 23.4 points per game. She led the conference with 10 rebounds per game and posted a .555 field goal percentage.

Santiago earned the second Big West Conference Player of the Year award of her career and was named the Mid-Major National Player of the Year, which meant she was deemed the top player outside of the six major conferences. The forward was also named an All-America honorable mention.

On top of that, the 6-2 Santiago finished as the all-time Cal Poly leader in scoring with 1,953 points and rebounding with 850.

After not getting taken in the WNBA Draft, Santiago is living her dream and playing professional basketball. She's a member of Dunav, which plays in the Bulgarian National Basketball League.
