Touching hero's homecoming unfolds live on KSBY

A local military hero is home for the holidays tonight. KSBY was there live tonight when Lt. Col. John Cole was greeted by a crowd of family and friends as he stepped off the plane at the San Luis Obispo airport tonight.

Lt. Col. Cole was deployed to Afghanistan last December assigned to civil affairs. He was a bit surprised to see the crowd gathered, and to have a friend immediately hook him up with a microphone and ear-piece so he could be interviewed live on KSBY at 10 on the CW5.

But his interview sure shared the magic of these homecomings with all of us. "We were all touched when we watched him wrap his arms around his wife Michele live and to see how eager he was to do so." said John Reger.

Lt. Col. Cole has been married to Michele for 17 years and they have endured four deployments now. First he was in Bosnia, then he went to Iraq, and his last two tours were in Afghanistan. He's been in the military for 28 years, serving both in the California National Guard and the US Army.

He says he can't wait to chow down on a blue-cheese appetizer his wife makes, a bloody mary in the morning and to visit local wineries. Then, he says, he just wants to kick back, enjoy his family and "watch the world go by" for awhile. Oh, and get to the "honey-do" list his wife made for him.

Welcome home Lt. Col. Cole. We appreciate you letting us be part of the celebration. We appreciate you and the sacrifices your family has made to complete your service.
