Traditions of all kinds on tap for New Year's Eve on the Central Coast

As 2013 winds down, the option paralysis of what to do with that last day of the year can take hold. No worries, friends. There are all kinds of options for you still available, no matter what your taste.

Paul Irving and his gang of fun-providers and fans will be rocking the Los Osos/Morro Bay area. Enjoy the "Hot fun Afro-Carribean music" of the Zongo All-Stars, Circus performers, 2 big horn bands, African drummers & dancers, silk aerialists, full bar, hot & fresh pizza, friends & family. Safe rides home also available. The party is at the Los Osos Community Center and you can bring the kids! Tickets $25.00 adults, $10.00 kids. For tickets or info, click here.

The city of Paso Robles is ringing in 2014 in a big way with a family-friendly "Glow in the Park" event in the downtown City Park. We're talking glow-in-the-dark games like badminton, horseshoes, bean bag toss and hula hoops. There will also be a glowing bubble tunnel for the smaller kids and glow-in-the-dark face painting for all.

There will be three food trucks on hand, a warming station and music throughout the evening. The evening culminates in a short fireworks show when the clock strikes midnight. The event runs from 8:00 p.m. to midnight. Admission is free.

A heads up to locals, this event will prompt some street closures so be patient and allow extra time if planning on partying in the downtown area of Paso tomorrow.

Celebrate your inner 80's mojo at the Cliff's Resort and Spa. You can do the whole New Year's Eve romantic dinner with a 3-course meal prepared by Chef Gregg beforehand or not. But as the dinner hour winds down, the party will be winding up in the Ballroom downstairs.

The Spazmatics are as theatrically fun as the 80's heavy-music they play. In addition to cocktail bar, enjoy a candy bar and photo booth. Prices are as follows:

Limited Dinner Menu in Marisol $85 per person
Limited Dinner Menu in the Lounge $50 per person
Ballroom Party $100 per person
Lounge Party $50 per person
Dinner in Marisol & Ballroom Party $165 per person
Dinner prices are exclusive of tax and gratuity.

Reservations Required for all of the above. Click here for tickets or more info.

Want to do something totally out of the ordinary. Two of my old college buddies have been doing just that for 22 years now. Frank Warren and Colin Campbell have staged a ball-drop at midnight from the downtown parking structure at Marsh St. and Morro St. in San Luis Obispo and it's gathered quite a following over the years. Cheesy? Totally. Creative, fun and memorable? Totally. No cost, just show up at the parking structure shortly before midnight. To get a little sense of what's on tap, click here and here.

And hands down my favorite New Year's ritual and celebration comes the day after. More of a way to leave the old year in the dust and kick off the new one with a happy, adventurous, fun-spirited start. It's the Carlin Soule' Memorial Polar Bear Dip in Cayucos. You and a few thousand of your fellow-free-spirited friends gather at the pier starting late morning, and at high noon, enjoy another countdown. Except this time you won't be looking for someone to kiss, you'll be looking at the Pacific and how you can get in and out of it the quickest.

It's crazy, but it's so fun. To see what I mean, click here. And I'm telling you, there's something spiritual to the whole deal. A baptism of sorts. It's a great way to wash away any yuck you want to leave behind from 2013 (and maybe your hangover) and start the new year right. Festivities begin at 9:30 a.m. Costumes encouraged and celebrated, but a plain old bathing suit, shorts or t-shirt, whatever works. Just bring dry warm clothes so you can continue the fun comfortably at Schooner's afterwards. See you at the pier!

And may 2014 be one to celebrate come this time next year.
