UCSB loses heartbreaker to Pacific, eliminated from Big West Tournament

Michael Bryson's potential go-ahead 3-point shot in the closing seconds clanked off the front of the rim as the UCSB men's basketball team saw its season end with a 71-68 first round loss to Pacific at the Big West Tournament in Anaheim.

The Gauchos overcame a 40-25 halftime deficit to take a a 57-55 lead with 9:59 to go in the game on a 3-point basket from Kyle Boswell. Bryson was red-hot in the second half. He poured in a 3 with 8:12 to play to make it 60-59 UCSB.

Bryson finished with a game-high 29 points on 7 for 11 shooting from 3-point range. Freshman Taran Brown added 16 points and 7 rebounds. The Tigers held All-Conference First Team Alan Williams to 4 points and 10 rebounds. The sophomore fouled out with 6:01 to play. He was just 1 for 10 from the field. He came into the tournament averaging almost 18 points and 11 rebounds per game.

Pacific shot 58 percent in the first half led by Colin Beatty. He finished the game with 26 points and 8 rebounds. He made 6 of his 7 shots from beyond the arc. Travis Fulton added 11 points and Lorenzo McCloud poured in 12 for the Tigers.

Pacific made 14 of its 25 free throws, a 56% mark. The Tigers were 9 for 16 from 3-point range (56%) and finished the game with a 36-30 edge in rebounds.

TJ Taylor added 11 points and 5 assists for the Gauchos. Kyle Boswell was held to just 8 points.

The Gauchos finished the season 11-20. Pacific improved to 20-12 and advanced into Friday's semifinals.

UCSB, which was the third youngest team in NCAA Division I basketball this season, saw its streak of three-straight appearances in the title games snapped.
