UCSB pitchers Shelby Wisdom and Alex Pingree combined to allow just one run in the Gauchos' doubleheader sweep of Big West rival Cal Poly 3-1 and 1-0 on Wednesday in Bob Janssen Field.
The Gauchos improved to 4-4 in conference and 23-15 overall, while the Mustangs fell to 5-6 in Big West action and 16-24-1 on the season.
Wisdom started game one for the Gauchos against Cal Poly's Chloe Wurst. The Mustang lefty committed an error that led to the Gauchos' first run that came on a base-hit by Arianna Palomares. The Mustangs collected 6 hits against Wisdom in the first four innings, but stranded them all until the fifth. Jillian Andersen lined her third hit in the game to center and scored three pitches later on a double to the right center field gap off the bat of junior shortstop Kim Westlund to tie the game 1-1.
UCSB answered with a RBI single from Lauren Boser in the sixth inning and added an insurance run in the seventh to take the opener 3-1.
Cal Poly sophomore Jordan Yates allowed just 5 hits suffered the loss in game two for the Mustangs. She dropped to 4-10 on the season. The lone run of the game came in the fifth inning when Jessica Soria singled up the middle to score pinch runner McKenzie Kane.
Pingree scattered 4 hits and struck out 4 in the complete game shutout for the Gauchos. She improved to 4-2 on the season.
The third and final game in the Blue-Green Rivalry is Wednesday, April 17 at 3pm at Cal Poly. The Mustangs return to action Saturday and Sunday in a three game series at Cal State Northridge.
