ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) - The fate of many captives held by an al-Qaida offshoot is uncertain in Algeria after military forces attempted a rescue.

At least six people, and perhaps many more, were killed, including Britons and Filipinos.

A U.S. official says some Americans escaped, but others remain either held or unaccounted for. The militants claim 35 hostages and 15 militants were killed.
