VAFB's Surf Beach reopens

Surf Beach at Vandenberg Air Force Base is open to the public again.

It was closed starting on April 10th, after a spike in beach access violations during the Western Snowy Plover breeding season.

Base officials say the closure was intended to refocus attention on the rules, which include no littering, no off-leash pets, no camping, no kite flying, and no feeding wildlife.

Violators can be fined up to $5,000 in federal court.

Surf Beach has a limit of 50 violations before it must be closed to beachgoers entirely through September 30th. Base officials say Surf Beach has 37 violations so far.
