Brooklyn VanderVeen and Melanie Popovich led the Eagles with three goals apiece in Arroyo Grande High girls water polo's 11-7 win over Cabrillo on a wet Wednesday afternoon.
The host Eagles improved to 1-0 on the season. They opened the season ranked #4 in CIF's Division 3. The Conquistadores, who are ranked 9th in Division 5, fell to 1-1.
The Eagles built a 3-0 lead after the first quarter. VanderVeen, a junior, scored the first goal of the game. Melanie Popovich and Kelsey Docouto scored as well in the first eight minutes.
Morgan Clark converted a penalty shot early in the second quarter to give AG a 4-0 lead. Cabrillo star Tancy Aldridge got the Conquistadores on the board with a ball that made it past Sonoma State signee Hannah Wadlow. Aldridge signed a national letter of intent last week to Cal State Bakersfield.
The Eagles took a 4-2 lead into halftime and extended it to 8-3 after three quarters.
Wadlow made 8 saves for AG in her first varsity start in goal for the Eagles.
