(KSL) Video from a Utah police dash-cam was released Wednesday and shows the conclusion of an unusual chase on I-80.
Earlier this month, a trooper spotted a stolen SUV and tried to stop it. Drivers on I-80 had called 911 to report a vehicle that was swerving all over the road. Troopers caught up to the SUV, and a chase ensued.
The video reveals the 911 dispatcher identifying the driver as a 14-year-old male, who had taken his parents' SUV without permission. A trooper can be heard saying the car was going 110 mph.
Cpl. Todd Johnson of the Utah Highway Patrol said that's about the time the trooper did the right thing and called off the chase.
"Just because of the hazard," Johnson said. "I mean, we've got a 14-year-old, probably had no driving or training with his driving. You can see the vehicle's wobbling back and forth."
But seconds after making that call, the driver rolled the vehicle. When officers reached the SUV, the teen was still inside, but injured.
A medical helicopter was called but was grounded because of the weather. The teen was taken by ambulance to Primary Children's Medical Center.
Johnson said the incident should serve as a learning experience for parents.
"There can be some family issues, some tense situations, that might be a time as well as with weapons, take the car keys away because that vehicle becomes a weapon as well," Johnson said.
The teen driver suffered only minor injuries, according to troopers. In addition to being in trouble with his parents, he's is now expected to be referred to juvenile court.
