Westlund, Yates lead Mustangs to 3-1 win over UCSB

Kim Westlund hit a 2-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning that proved to be the difference in the Cal Poly softball team's 3-1 Big West win over rival UCSB on Wednesday.

The win helped Cal Poly avoid a sweep at the hands of the Gauchos and improved its conference mark to 7-8 overall. The Gauchos, who swept a doubleheader at Cal Poly last week, fell to 6-6 in Big West action.

UCSB scored the first run of the game when Keliani Jennings hit a fly ball that center fielder Whitley Gerhart could not track down in the top of the first inning allowing Jessica Soria to score form third with two outs. Cal Poly evened the score at 1-1 when Breana West clubbed a fly ball down the right field line that fell in for extra bases. Westlund, who had walked with two outs, scored all the way from first on West's triple.

The game stayed tied into the fourth until Westlund clubbed a single to left with two outs that scored Cami Brown and Jillian Andersen.

Jordan Yates went the distance for the Mustangs. She scattered 4 hits, 1 earned run, 3 walks and struck out 3 to earn the victory. She improved to 5-11 on the season.

Alex Pingree was tagged with the loss after giving up 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings and 3 runs. She dropped to 6-3 on the season.

Cal Poly collected 11 hits, including 2 each from Andersen, West, Lauren Moreno, Gerhart and Brown.

The Mustangs continue their homestand with three games against 15th ranked Hawaii this weekend. There is a doubleheader on Saturday that starts at 4 pm at Bob Janssen Field.
