LOS ANGELES (AP) - Oh my pod!

Whale watchers off the Southern California coast got an eyeful for the ages when a boat from Rancho Palos Verdes that was about to turn back suddenly changed directions.

The captain descended on a pod of gray whales, which usually travel alone or in groups of two or three as they migrate. This one had 23.

Alisa Schulman Jangier, director of a group that charts whales for the American Cetacean Society, told the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/TiAFS0) when she got word Sunday, she raced out to see and count the once-in-a-lifetime spectacle.

The biggest she'd seen previously was about a dozen in 1985, and none of her colleagues had seen one so huge in 30 years.

Whale watcher Cinzia Quevedo says it was like seeing "dancing water."
