Despite a late surge from San Marcos, the Arroyo Grande High boys basketball team hit its shots down the stretch to beat the visiting Royals 57-54 on Wednesday night.
The Eagles improved to 8-2 on the season, while San Marcos fell to 5-4. The Royals beat AG last season 65-47.
Cobe Williams led the Eagles with 16 points and 7 assists. He hit 5 of his 6 free throws in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory. The sophomore hit 3 of the Eagles' four 3-point baskets, Carson Wack drained the other. Matt Willkomm poured in 14 points and dished out 5 assists. Andrew Midyett finished with 9 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. DeSean Scott and Quillan Smith each had 6 points.
Behind three 3-pointers, Jake Wheelcock led the Royals with 17 points, while Bryce Ridenour added 15 points before fouling out of the game.
Arroyo Grande made 15 of its 18 free throw attempts, an 83% clip, to earn the preseason victory. The Eagles came in ranked #8 in Division 2A, while San Marcos was tabbed 11th in Division 3AA.
