Senior point guard Matt Willkomm hit a running jumper from 14 feet as time expired to give Arroyo Grande a 53-51 win over Canyon on Friday night in Arroyo Grande. The win advances the Eagles to the semifinals of the Division 2A playoffs. Arroyo Grande will play at Redondo Union on Tuesday night.
The Eagles were ahead 28-27 at the half but Canyon was up 44-42 going into the fourth. The final quarter was back and forth, Arroyo Grande was up two with 30 seconds left before Canyon senior JoJo Ballestero hit a shot to tie. After a timeout the Eagles held for one shot. Several passes around the perimeter got the ball to Cobe Williams who found Willkomm coming off the screen to the top of the key. Willkomm took one dribble toward the hoop and then jumped off his left foot for the running jumper as the horn sounded. The Arroyo Grande student section rushed the floor to celebrate with the players following the game-winning shot.
Willkomm scored 15 points to go along with 5 assists. Junior center Andrew Midyett had team highs with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 4 charges taken. Midyett has now drawn 7 charges in the last two games. Senior DeSean Scott had 12 points and 6 rebounds.
Arroyo Grande is now 22-8 and the only Pac-7 team still alive despite finishing fourth in the league.
The Eagles next opponent, Redondo Union is now 21-8 after winning at Glendora, 55-41 in the quarterfinals. The Sea Hawks top player is 6'1" junior point guard Ian Fox. Fox is averaging 15 points and 2.5 steals per game. The game will be in Redondo because the Sea Hawks were on the road in the quarterfinals. Redondo Union is the second seed, Arroyo Grande is the 11th seed in Division 2A.
This is the fourth time in the last seven years Arroyo Grande has advanced to the semifinals.
