SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Officials at a San Francisco hospital say a woman has been found dead in a stairwell, and authorities are investigating whether it may be a patient reported missing more than two weeks ago.
San Francisco General Hospital spokeswoman Rachael Kagan says the unidentified woman's body was found by an employee in the rarely used exterior stairwell Tuesday morning.
Kagan says it's not known how long the woman had been on the stairway - which is used as a fire escape - or how she got there.
The cause of the woman's death is under investigation.
Kagan also says it hasn't been determined if the woman is 57-year-old Lynne Spalding, who was being treated for an infection at the hospital when she disappeared from her room on Sept. 21.
