Senior Brittany Woodard scored a career-high 21 points to lead three Mustangs in double figures as the Cal Poly women's basketball team survived a late run by UC Davis 73-71 in a Big West Conference battle in Mott Gym on Thursday night. Cal Poly's defense shut down any attempt of a last second game-tying shot in the final seconds to preserve the victory. The Mustangs, the two-time defending regular season conference champions, improved to 2-1 in Big West play and 8-6 overall. UC Davis dropped to 0-2 in conference and 5-8 overall.
Woodard hit nine of her 17 shots from the floor. Her previous career-high was 18 points. She added 8 rebounds and 2 assists. Sophomore guard Ariana Elegado added 16 points on five 3-point buckets to go with 5 assists. Righetti High graduate Molly Schlemer came off the bench to score 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting.
Nikol Allison led the team with 8 rebounds to go with 8 points in her second start of the season. Jonae Ervin poured in 8 points and dished out a team-high 6 assists.
The Aggies' Cortney French led all scorers with 26 points when she made 10 of 13 shots from the floor and six of eight from long range. Sydnee Fipps added 17 points for UCD with Blair Shinoda scoring 14 points.
UC Davis outshot the Mustangs, 51 percent to 45 percent with each team connecting for eight 3-pointers. Cal Poly outrebounded UCD, 36-25, with 15 coming on the offensive end of the court. Cal Poly handed out 20 assists in the game while turning the ball over just 14 times. UCD had 11 assists with 17 turnovers.
Cal Poly led by as many as thirteen points in the first half and settled for a 43-32 lead at the break. Cal Poly led by ten with 7:22 left in the game when UC Davis used a 15-7 run to cut the lead to two with 1:43 left in the game. Ervin drove for a layup on Cal Poly's next possession to give the Mustangs a four point advantage with 18 seconds left. The Aggies hit two free throws on their next possesion and fouled Ervin, who missed the front end of a one and one with nine seconds to play. The Aggies advanced the ball up the court, but could not get a look at the basket as time expired without getting a shot off.
Cal Poly hosts Pacific Saturday at 4pm. The Tigers won at UCSB 64-52 on Thursday night.
